T

he Jewish community tends to cringe
when one of its own is accused of any-
thing resembling criminal behavior,
as if it will inevitably unleash a tide
of anti-Semitic rage.
Such was the case with Jonathan Pol-
lard, the U.S. Naval Intelligence officer who
was sentenced to life in prison 11 years ago
for spying for Israel.
Yet, a national survey conducted in the
aftermath of the Pollard affair showed that
most Americans thought Mr. Pollard had
spied for the Soviet Union, notes David Gad-
