Elena Kogan is one of12 guides who lead tours and explain the highlights of the museum collec- tion. "It gives me a good chance to practice my language skills," says the 22-year-old guide. A native of St. Petersburg, she speaks Eng- lish, Hebrew, French and, of course, Russian. Besides serving as a museum guide, the ambitious emigre is also earning a master's degree in French literature from Tel Aviv University. Meeting the young Russians adds a dimension to the travel experience. As she leads a tour for visitors from the U.S., Elena is energetic and articulate as she talks about each work of art and about the ca- reer of liana Goor. "It's very interesting work," she says, relaxing on the outdoor ter- race after her tour. "And it's a great pleasure to work in an art environment." For Henry Safir, working in Is- rael is also a great pleasure. He works as chief assistant to Israel's most prominent sculptor, Frank Meisler. It's his job to make new models for all the sculpted works that Mr. Meisler creates. Born and raised in Soshi, a town near the Black Sea, Henry Safir, now 32, was the first Russ- ian to be hired by the Frank Meisler studio in Old Jaffa. There are now six others, with Henry holding the highest position. "This is a very special art, and every day I learn something new," says the modelist, sitting at a large table where he works carefully and painstakingly with an intri- cate model. He's only one flight of stairs away from Frank Meisler's own workroom, and the two work closely together. Mr. Safir gained this position because of his artistic skills and also his gutsy determination. When he first emigrated, he knew no Hebrew at all. But he was al- ready an experienced artist who had done painting and sculpture in Russia and had studied art at the University of Moscow. Soon after he settled in Tel Aviv, he eagerly explored Old Jaf- fa, where many artists have their studios. Taking a walk, he passed Frank Meisler's gallery and went inside to admire the beautifully sculpted works in precious met- als. "Right away I knew this was the place I wanted to work," he re- laths. And not long after that vis- it, he gamely decided to apply for a job, even though he could hard- ly communicate his purpose ver- bally. "I couldn't speak much Hebrew, so I tried to use sign lan- guage to explain that I wanted to work here," he says. But he also showed the art samples he'd brought with him, including both paintings and sculpture. And on that basis, he was offered a job the same day. He began by working in the foundry where the metal is cast. "I had to learn everything," he ex- plains. Gradually, he worked his way up. All the while, Frank Meisler, who saw his talent, gave him encouragement and mentor- `• By the time Mr. Meisler asked him to do a miniature, he did it so well that Mr. Meisler decided to promote him. Gradually, the sculptor gave his young protege more and more responsibility. By now the two have a very close working relationship. "He's given me a lot of atten- tion and respect," says Henry. "Even though he's the artist and the boss, he treats me like an equal. He is a very special per- son." Life has changed dramatically for the emigre from Soshi who ar- rived in Israel all alone six years ago. He is now married to an Is- raeli woman, and they have a son, age 3, and a daughter who is 2 years old. As for his work, it is, for him, a dream come true. "Even if I weren't getting paid, I would love what rm doing," says Henry Safir. "It's the job of my dreams."
