Elta Wins
IDF Radar Tender
Jerusalem (JPFS) — The Israel
Defense Forces will receive a new
radar for the detection of close-
range ground and air threats de-
vised by Israel Aircraft
Industries' Elta subsidiary, ex-
ecutives said.
The new radar, called EL/M-
2129, is a ground-based system
for security and paramilitary ap-
plications which detects and
monitors movements in specific
/\-) areas.
Executives said the radar au-
tomatically spots moving targets
such as vehicles, flying heli-
copters and even people at
ranges of up to six miles.
Defense sources said the radar
could be a tool in the fight
against Hezbollah in south
Lebanon and can also detect
small packages. IAI executives
said Elta won the contract in a
competition that included sever-
al international firms, such
as Thomson SA in Paris, the U.S.
firm IAL and a British company.

In Joint Venture
Jerusalem (JPFS) —Elscint Ltd.
of Haifa and GE Medical Sys-
tems, a $4 billion subsidiary of
General Electric Company, an-
nounced a 50/50 joint venture to
engineer and manufacture nu-
clear medicine products.
Under the terms of the deal,
the joint venture company will
operate in Haifa, and GEMS and
Elscint will separately market
and service the jointly developed
nuclear medicine products under
the brand name of each partner.
Nuclear medicine technology,
such as X-ray, mammography,
magnetic resonance, ultrasound
and nuclear medicine imaging de-
vices are used in the detection of
diseases, as well as abnormalities
in veins, tissues and organs.

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Belgacom,
Belgium's leading telecommuni-
cations operator, has selected ECI
Telecom Ltd. to be its sole sup-
plier of access-network pair-gain
solutions, which expand the
capacity of existing telecommu-
nications services, an ECI repre-
sentative said.
Under the terms of the agree-
ment, the Petah Tikvah-based
company will deliver its access
products over the next three
years, generating sales that could
exceed $30 million.
The systems ECI will deliver
to Belgacom will be supported by
management controls and incor-
porate a special copper wire line-
testing feature.
Meanwhile, ECI also an-
nounced that it received a $6.8
million contract to supply its sub-
scriber systems to Instituto
Costarricense de Electricidad,
Costa Rica's state body for elec-
tricity and telecommunications.
ECI designs digital telecom-
munications and data transmis-
sion systems for telecommu-
nications providers. The compa-
ny is British Telecom's sole sup-
plier of BDSL equipment, which
increases the number of users
that can be served through a pair
of existing copper-wire telephone
lines, and supplies 60 percent of
Deutsche Telekom's high-speed
optical transmission equipment,
which connects trunk lines be-
tween major German cities.
