Generalizing
Is Unfair

/-

/---

It was with great surprise and
disappointment that I read your
publisher's notebook titled
"Thank the Docs for Adminis-
tering CPR" in the Feb. 14 issue
of the The Jewish News.
As a Jewish physician, I
resent your misrepresentation
of "Jewish doctors" as unpleas-
ant people for Federation fund-
raisers to deal with and as
uncharitable and selfish when it
comes to giving money.
Physicians, I'm sure you
already know, are no different
than any other composite group
that we can point to. We as Jews
have always insisted on judging
each person for himself, never
using "generalization technique"
to minimize anyone in a
group of people you want to den-
igrate.
How do you know what indi-
viduals donate to the myriad of
charities worthy of our support?
How do you know of the many
hours donated by physicians for
charitable purposes?
You are correct that physi-
cians, and especially Dr. Hugh
Beckman, did work very hard to
strengthen Sinai Hospital in the
hope that it would continue to
stand independent as an excep-
tional institution, deserving sup-
port from not only the medical
community but the community-
at-large.
And when it appeared that no
other alternative to maintain
Sinai as an independent insti-
tution was available, these
physicians worked hard for a
merger with a high-quality, eco-
nomically strong organization,
the partner ultimately chosen
being the Detroit Medical Cen-
ter.
These physicians' efforts were
undertaken not for personal
gain, but in response to their de-
sire to help their community
maintain its Jewish-sponsored
hospital, the only one in Michi-
gan, to maintain its service to the
greater community of Detroit
and at the same time develop a
trust fund, which will be avail-
able to support so many chari-
table needs in the community
that could only be given lip ser-
vice in the past.
Mr. Horwitz, as I sift through
the many requests for support to
organizations, from Akiva to the
Zionist Organization of Ameri-
ca, I hope I will not succumb to
generalizing as you have done,
to insult any group of individu-
als, even to make a point which
I might personally support. I
trust you will reflect on my com-
ments regarding your unfortu-
nate article.
