bout a year and a half ago,
after much consideration
and anxiety, I withdrew my
25-year membership from
my local synagogue because of the
public rhetoric of its spiritual
leader. Spewing hate and vitriol
toward the elected leaders of the
State of Israel, the rabbi had in-
voked Holocaust terminology with
respect to the peace process and
had cast Israeli government lead-
ers as willful accessories in the
shedding of Jewish blood.
Much has happened to Israel
and the Jewish people since that
time. The democratically elected
prime minister of the State of Is-
rael was gunned down by a fellow
Jew. Fifty-nine innocents were
murdered by Islamic extremist
suicide bombers in Jerusalem and
Tel Aviv. A Likud government re-
placed Labor after winning the Is-
raeli election last spring. Likud
