Author, lecturer and funeral
director, David Techner is nationally
recognized for his work with parents
and their children by educating
them to the wisdom and beauty of
the Jewish response to death.

Yiddishist Leo Rosten Dead At 88

New York (JTA) — Leo Ros-
ten, who translated his ma-
maloshen into English and
helped make words like "shlep"
and "nosh" part of the Ameri-
can vernacular, has died.
Perhaps best known for The
Joys of Yiddish, which was
published in 1968, Mr. Rosten
also authored dozens of books
of fiction, including mysteries,
and non-fiction, as an amateur
sociologist.
His first book, The Education Leo Rosten

of H*Y*M*A*N K*A*P*L*A*N
published in 1937, which grew out of short sto-

She is survived by her sons,
Norman of Scarsdale, N.Y., and
Irwin of Bloomfield Hills and
their families. She was the
beloved wife of the late Joseph
Alterman.
Interment was at Alliance
Cemetery in Vineland.

MATTHEW SCOTT DOREN,
22, of West Bloomfield, died Feb.
20. He was a graduate of Detroit
Country Day School where he
was captain of the swim team
and an All-State swimmer. Dur-
ing high school, he was active in
B'nai Brith Youth Organization
and was president of Rose AZA.
Matthew was a 1996 -gradu-
ate of Michigan State University
where he was a member of Al-
pha Tau Omega Fraternity. He
had recently completed an in-
ternship in international affairs
in Taiwan while simultaneously
studying the Chinese language
at the Chinese Cultural Univer-
sity. While in Taiwan, he was in-
volved in six foreign commer-
cials and two appearances in
Taiwanese soap operas.
While on vacation in Thai-
land, Matthew died in a head-on
collision. Matthew is survived by
his parents, Martin and Naomi
Doren of West Bloomfield; sis-
ter, Cheryl Doren of Troy;

Lodz, Poland, and immigrated
with his family to the United
States when he was 3.

filled with other Jewish new
Americans, which formed the
setting for his later writing.

SHELDON FT AISON, 72, of
West Bloomfield, died Feb. 19.
Mr. Ellison was an electrical en-
gineer for General Dynamics
and had previously worked for
Bendix on the space program
and at the Chrysler Tank Plant.
He was Also a member of Con-
gregation Beth Shalom.
Mr. Ellison is survived by his
wife, Perlyn Ellison; daughters
and sons-in-law, Terry and Mar-
tin W. Hollander of West Bloom-
field, Sandi and Steven Matz of
West Bloomfield; grandchildren,
Jared, Danny and Rachel Matz,
Harvey and Jane Hollander,
Marla and Steve Polott; five
great-grandchildren; mother-in-
law, Rose Rosenthal; brother
and sister-in-law, Hal and Fay
Eisenberg of Southfield; sister
and brother-in-law, Laura and
Gary Kienscherf of Southfield.

SYLVIA ELLNIAN, 80, of
North Miami, Fla., died Feb. 20.
Mrs. Ellman is survived by
her daughter and son-in-law,
Sharon Gara Wittenberg and
Aaron Wittenberg; grandchil-
dren, Laura, Robert, Brian and
Marc Wittenberg; great-grand-
daughter, Sophie Wittenberg;
brother, Jack Stone. She was
the beloved wife of the late
Samuel Ellman.
