S PPRREIS NEGNPTRI NE: PREVIEW .0 4i5it‘44SPECIAOLF the decision of the Labor Party's secretary to prepare for the pos- sibility of new elections should the government fall over the af- fair. There's good reason for their reserve, as it's not at all clear who Labor's candidate for prime minister should be if elections are held before June 3 (when Mr. Peres' term as party chair- man ends). Mr. Peres and Mr. Barak both know that the last thing Labor needs now, when the Likud is on the defensive, is a bloody internal leadership bat- tle. Meanwhile, in Mr. Ne- tanyahu's government, minis- ters representing two of his coalition partners — Avigdor Kahalani of the Third Way and Natan Sharansky of Yisrael Ba- Aliyah — have made far-reach- ing (though prudently vague) statements. They say that should the inquiry reveal shady dealings, the government does not deserve to stand. Knesset member Shaul Yahalom of the National Reli- gious Party has recently joined in that chorus. And it is possi- ble that Shas could bolt in anger if it feels that its leader, Aryeh Deri, i _ s being singled out for blame. Within the Likud itself, only one minister has come out staunchly in Mr. Netanyahu's defense. Behind the scenes, there's already talk of a possi- ble successor. Attention has fo- cused on both Finance Minister Dan Meridor (the Likud's "Mister Clean" and thus an ap- pealing alternative should Ne- tanyahu come out looking compromised) and Defense Min- ister Yitzhak Mordechai (who enjoys great popularity with the rank and file. Whether indictments will be brought should be known with- in a few weeks. ❑ Shops Reopen In Hebron Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian storekeepers began to reopen shops in an Arab market in downtown Hebron for the first time in three years. Israel's opening of the mar- ket, which is adjacent to the Avraham Avinu settler complex, honors the recent agreements made with the Palestinians. Most of the West Bank town was transferred to Palestinian self-rule as a result of the ac- cords. The market had been shut down in 1994, after a Jewish settler killed 29 Palestinian wor- shipers in the Tomb of the Pa- triarchs. Hebron has a population of about 130,000 Palestinians and 500 Jews. 1997 SUMMER SHOES I / Sesto Meucci & Rangoni VAN Please Join Us for Coffee and Pastries and Meet Our Special Guest Robert Krass, Consultant FEATURING SATURDAY, MARCH 1st 10-5 1 5% OFF ALL Sesto Meucci, Rangoni & Van Eli (SATURDAY ONLY (Excluding Evening Shoes and Previous Sales) SHOE GALLERY 15 Mile and Orchard Lake Road West Bloomfield Plaza 851-5470 THE CUTTING EDGE JUST GOT SHARPER INTRODUCING THE 3.00L. . 805 E.
