ed almost solely of hospitals
and Medical care. How envi-
ous she must have been of my
typical high-school concerns:
boys, hairstyles, irascible teach-
ers like Mrs. Bollmeier, about
which I complained incessant-
ly.
Still, I know she was grateful
for my calls, because she told
me she looked forward to
them. She had been so lonely,
she said.
I am surprised wheal look
back at myself because I was,
and still am, a private person. A
"casual conversation" is a strug-
gle for me. I feel uneasy enter-
ing rooms with large groups of
people where I will have to
fight against myself and make
small talk.
I didn't call Linda because I
have an extraordinarily sensi-
tive soul that yearns to reach
out to others. But I do know
that the Torah teaches us to lit-
erally run to do good, and I
have tried to remember that
concept again and again. It has
never failed me. I do not want
to miss a chance to do some-
thing right simply because of
my own shortcomings; I would
hate myself now if I re'21ized I
had never called Linda because
I did not enjoy, and indeed was
a failure at lighthearted chatter.
This is especially true when I
consider something Linda told
me that never ceased to amaze
me.
Of more than 40 students in
Mrs. Bollmeier's class -- stu-
dents from solid, middle-class
homes, bright young men and
women who had had a re-
markable array of life experi-
ences -- I had been the only
one who ever called Linda. El
