The sucking reflex may be normal
and healthy in babies, but the habit of
thumb-sucking should be discouraged
once a child makes the switch to sol-
id food. Older children usually rely on
the thumb-sucking habit to provide
them with psychological comfort, but
it can cause problems if the habit is al-
lowed to persist beyond the time when
permanent teeth begin to erupt.
Thumb-sucking muses the teeth to de-
velop abnormally, and often produces
an "open bite" in which the top teeth
fail to close down over the lowers when
the jaws are closed. To avert the need
for treatment of this and other prob-
lems with malpositioned teeth, the or-
thodontist may prescribe special fixed
appliances designed for habit control.
The most suitable time to break a child
of the thumb-sucking habit is between
the ages of four and seven. During this
time, it is still possible to avoid serious
damage of the permanent teeth.
The American Association of Or-
thodontists recommends a first visit
to an orthodontist by age seven. The
results of orthodontic care are often
enhanced by early treatment. In a
growing patient, the orthodontist may
be able to redirect facial growth to help
correct jaw alignment and teeth posi-
tion. To schedule a consultation, call
our office at 360-7700, or see us at
8362 Richardson in Commerce
TwpiWest Bloomfield. Evening and
Saturday hours are available.

P.S. The best way to break children
above the age of four of the thumb-
sucking habit is to calmly explain what
will happen to teeth if the habit is not
broken.

SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
No matter what you call it, road
rage, highway hysteria or mo-
tor madness, you know what it
is because you've probably been
there.
You're driving down the road,
minding your own business,
when the driver in the next
lane abruptly cuts in front of
you, barely missing your fend-
er.
As you slam on the brakes,
you thrust your hand in the air,
offering the universal gesture of
annoyance.
And, just to make sure he
knows you're really angry, you
scream out a string of insults,
enunciating each one so pre-
cisely that if he can't hear you,
\ he'll surely be able to read your
/- lips.
Feel better? Maybe — but
only for a second.
As soon as the adrenaline
subsides, you'll probably be em-
barrassed by your actions.
"People often get very differ-
ent behind the wheel. They feel
anonymous. They think they'll
never see this guy again, so they
let out their anger and do things
/- and say things that they'd nev-
er do or say face to face," said Dr.
Arnold Nerenberg, a clinical
psychologist from Whittier,
Calif., who specializes in help-
ing his patients overcome hos-
tile driving habits and has
written a handbook, "Overcom-
ing Road Rage."
"This behavior would be con-
sidered inappropriate at a social
/- gathering.
"But, there's a bit of social
permissiveness to it if it's done
in a car," Nerenberg said.
