"We've done research on this is- sue with a couple of the large ad- vertising agencies," said Mr. Glieberman. "And they said the fan is becoming disconnected with the player. That's because the player has become such a super- star that he's no longer like the Hank Greenbergs and Harvey Kuenns. "The whole time I was a kid growing up, George Kell was on third base [for the Detroit Tigers]. I never thought of anybody else playing third base. I could identi- fy with him. "If you think of a kid growing up today, and they want these role models — and they do love sports role models — how do they feel? The players are here today and if there's more money to be made, they're gone. Or the whole team is gone. Single-entity leagues are the answer." And single-entity leagues also benefit the advertisers. "Here's what a sponsor fears. They're in the NHL, and Coca Cola pays for major advertising and promotion on television. The cameras are panning the game and there's rival Pepsi Cola's logo right there. That's murder for Pep- si. Ifs what they call ambush mar- keting." Single-entity leagues can offer what Mr. Glieberman calls "fully integrated sponsorship packages." "Because you own the whole league, you can tell the sponsor, We'll give you the opening title at all games on the scoreboard. We'll give you the logo in the middle of the field in all stadiums if you want. We'll give you the goalposts_ in all the stadiums." Single-entity sports may also have timing in their favor. It is no secret that megabuck television advertisers are looking for places where they can sponsor clean fam- ily entertainment. So if sponsors like single-enti- ty leagues, are the television net- works just waiting to join the love feast? Mr. Glieberman believes they are. He says networks can go–\ to their sponsors and tell them the stadiums are controlled. Televi- sion now has the technology so that if a camera is panning a sta- dium and sees a Pepsi sign, it can immediately convert it to a Coke sign. But Mr. Glieberman said he's already seen a stadium lease stating you can not block out their signs with new technology where-' you're on television. So isn't it only logical to expect that the All-American Football League will be a single-entity league when it is finally un- wrapped this spring? Only time will tell. However, Mr. Glieberman said, while starting a league is difficult, "in our case, we've got six years' experience in sports, so we kno what will work. My son and t know from watching major league soccer, which has come very close to being a single-entity league, that this is the way to start a league now. `The business of sports is no dif- ferent than any other business. You've got to remember that when you're in sports there are two key things: You're in media/ and you're in entertainment. And if you're starting a new league to- day, everything is media. If you can't get media coverage, you're dead," said Mr. Glieberman. 111 Internet Everything you wanted to know about the Internet but were afraid to ask ning Corporation, 10;30 a.m.- noon and 2:30-4 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Farmington Hills Library.
