SPRING
RENAISSA
tors certainly do support our city's
synagogues and temples.
You also assert that doctors
were motivated by self-interest in
saving Sinai. What you fail to re-
alize is that many of us sacrificed
thousands of dollars of income by
restricting our practices to Sinai
Hospital. Despite the excellent
care we provide and the wonder-
ful reputation of our attending
stall; there are still large segments
of the suburban community which
will not travel below Eight Mile
Road.
I was wondering, as I read your
article, about the level of giving
among Jewish News executives.
Given your tone of condescension,
I must assume that it is extraor-
dinarily high.
Perhaps someone who pub-
lishes a Jewish newspaper should
not be doing fund raising for Fed-
eration if he cannot keep the two
roles separate. Your unfounded
generalizations and libelous ac-
cusations were unprofessional and
un-Jewish. Shame on you.
Happily, my wife has said that
I can give more money to Feder-
ation next year if I will be more
frugal. Therefore, cancel my sub-
scription to The Jewish News.
Somehow, I will have to survive
without knowing how Jews spent
Saint Valentine's Day next year.

Back to the can trip with the
rabbi. By the end of the lengthy
ride, the issue was no longer
"should we run the story?" but
"what would happen if we didn't
run it?"
Would someone fall ill because
of the kosher food he ate? Would
the cleanliness conditions get
worse?
I hope not.
Three months from now, staff'
writer Jill Sklar will go back and
see if there's been any improve-
ment.
It would give us no greater
sense of community pride than to
print a cover story saying that the- '
dirt has been cleaned up, that in
Detroit when you say kosher, it
means cleaner.
The Council of Orthodox Rab-
bis of Greater Detroit relies on the
state to monitor the cleanliness
conditions of these facilities. We
want these facilities also to rely
on their own sense of loyalty to the
consumer. It's not just about
pleasing an inspector from the-'
state. These stores should be more
interested in pleasing their most
important "inspectors," their cus-
tomers. ❑
