Carefully and without too much advance notice, I brought in the loot and set up shop. Displayed on the tables in the lunchroom was a vast as- sortment of beer and pretzels. Was this happy hour, some of my astonished co-workers asked when I told them what would be featured as a Kosher Bites taste test? No, sillies, I said. It is up to our fearless tasters to determine ex- actly which of the two kinds of pretzels would be the best to snack on and which of the three kinds of beer would be the best to sip. • Jews, I was told, don't drink beer. Noth- ing was too sweet for the palate; in fact, the sweeter, the better. Well, it had been a long time since I tried my last root beer. So long, I can't even remember when it was. After tasting the three root beers, I suddenly remembered why I do not indulge in it very often. Root beer is way too thick and syrupy and sits very heav- ily in my stomach. Although I loved it as a kid, I can't tolerate it as an adult. Of the three, I liked the ba- sic, light taste of A & W the best. Although it was a bit bubblier than I like my pop, it was not medicinal tasting like Dr. Brown's (no pun intended) and was not as heavy as IBC. . Of the pretzels, I liked Har- ry's much better than the dry and dusty Newman's. The staff agreed: MIME ■ I MINI "Exceptionally frothy." — Jeff Hermann Dr. Brown's Root Beer: "Watch your nose. This one is very fizzy." — Debbie Schultz "A little harsh, not as smooth as A & W." — Lisa Wylin A & W Root Beer: "Smoother than Dr. Brown's." — Gayle Baldi "Always the best." —Kevin Camp Newman's Own Organic Bavarian Pretzels: Expires 2-27-97 18 The Rating: back a cold one after watching the gardener mow the expansive lawn on a sweltering summer day? Who doesn't like to sip on a draft at a gathering of the testos- terone enhanced in a dark and smoky bar during Red Wing - hockey night? But this wasn't that kind of beer. No, this was root beer, a de- cidedly neutral beverage. For our test, we tried Dr. Brown's Draft Style Root Beer, A & W Root Beer and IBC Root Beer, all under rabbinic supervi- sion. To complement the drinks, we sampled Newnian's Own Or- ganic Bavarian Pretzels and Har- ry's Sourdough Pretzels. The pop (not soda, this is the Midwest after all) ranged in calo- ries from 110 to 170 per serving, carried no fat grams, and had anywhere from no sodiurn .to 35 milligrams. 111111111 =IN MIN NMI 11111•1•1 "Good flavor, yet lighter than Dr. Brown's." —Anne Ward "Not even if the cupboards were bare." — Julie Edgar KOSHER BITES page 120
