When told by the court to move with her children into the home of an observant family, the woman balked and sought the services of a macher. She says she paid him $6,000, and three weeks later received a conver- sion certificate and an ID card marked "Jewish." Rabbi Eli Ben-Dahan, direc- tor of the rabbinical courts, says he has looked into the issue and found that rabbinical judges are not involved in the "quickie" con- version-for-pay scam.
