Way also signaled that they re-
garded the building of Har
Homa as a "red line" for the Ne-
tanyahu government. Rafael Ey-
tan (of the Tsomet faction of the
Likud) went so far as to warn,
explicitly, that he would leave
the government if the construc-
tion were not approved.
But perhaps the most promi-
nent personality to turn on Mr.
Netanyahu was one of his clos-
est supporters, Jerusalem May-
or Ehud Olmert. A prime mover
behind the ill-fated opening of
the Hasmonean Tunnel, Mr.
Olmert seemed unfazed by that
experience when he declared: "I
see Har Homa as a watershed
for my support of the govern-
ment and its policy. If Har Homa
won't be [built], there will be a
rethinking [of my position], on
everything."

Top Likud supporters
are pressuring the
government to move
forward.

The lowest blow of all, how-
ever, came from the most obvi-
ous but least logical quarter: the
opposition. Rather than support
Netanyahu's presumed tilt to-
ward moderation in the peace
process, the Labor party tabled
a no-confidence motion in the
prime minister for his failure to
proceed with the construction of
Har Homa.
Whatever transpires, the
trend is to watch the increas-
ingly defiant tone of Mr. Ne-
tanyahu's coalition partners and
the increasingly cranky mood in
the Likud itself. For months
now, every pundit has been try-
ing to psyche Mr. Netanyahu out
and tag him as an "ideologue" or
a "pragmatist."
It may turn out that his real
talent is as a political juggler
growing more and more
proficient at keeping all the
balls in the air. One shouldn't
be surprised, for example, if
talk of a National Unity Gov-
ernment doesn't creep back into
the headlines as an answer to
Har Homa. 0
