BEHAVIOR Take Our Ck Whale Of A Tale Children, if you think your par- ents force you to eat some pret- ty insufferable things now ("Mushrooms, Mom? And last week it was tofu?"), imagine how you would feel if they served up a dish of leviathan. The leviathan is a strange creature men- tioned in the Torah. It's something of a gigantic fish (some even said it had seven heads). According to tradition, when Mashiach (the Messiah) comes, there will be a festive meal at which the right- eous will dine on the leviathan. You can read about the leviathan in Isaiah 27:1, Psalms 74:14 and 104:26, Job 3:8 and 41:1. What do you think the leviathan looked like? We would love to see your drawings. Please send your art to 2 Leviathan, c/o The Ap- pleTree, 27676 Franklin Rd., Southfield, MI 48034. We'll publish as many pictures as possible. . From its point of view, every pack needs a leader, and while you may think you're the law, your dog may interpret the situation otherwise. We are verbal; dogs are not. You can tell your pooch you're the head honcho, but Fido will be far more interested in your body language, tone of voice and patterns of interaction you establish. What often happens is some basic canine-human miscommunication. To find out who's top and who's low dog, answer these 10 questions with total honesty, and if you're not sure, don't turn to your dog for help. If you play tug-of-war games with your dog, who usually walks away with the prize? 4, Who has the last word on where your dog sleeps? Is your dog such an affection hound it won't take no for an answer? Does your dog put up a fuss when you try to take away its toy? Who eats first at night—you or the dog? Or, alternatively, invest in some serious training classes for your pushy dog. Answers And Advice 1. In a dog den, adult dogs lie where they want to and low- status pups get out of the way. If you act like a puppy and walk around your dog, it'll assume this is submission. 2. Pack leaders always lead the way. Follow your dog, and it'll take that as a vote of doggy for president. 3. Be serious. 4. It's easier to exert control as pack leader if games start and stop with you. 5. Wrestling and tug-of-war are contests of strength: they're not just games. If you lose interest in the object before your dog does, you'll let go, and your dog will do a little victory dance. This is not going to help him respect your leadership skills. 6. As in question 1, choice of a sleeping spot is an honor that goes to the dominant one. If you offer that status to your dog, it'll take that and run with it. 7. What seems to us like affection can be an attempt at dom- inance from a dog's perspective. Asking for attention is nice; demanding it is another story. Pushiness equals dominance. 8. In a healthy household the toys belong to you and are borrowed by your dog. If Spot thinks they're his toys, he could well growl and snap when "his" property seems threatened. 9. If you feed your dog first, it may interpret this as an invi- tation to be your leader for life. 10. Draw the line somewhere. It might as well start here or you'll be watching Lassie reruns for a long time to come.
