times can be an important in-
gredient for a balanced diet.
For a variety of reasons, the
senses of taste and smell decline
with age. The loss can result from
disease or medications as well as
from normal aging. Without the
pleasure of eating, it's very com-
mon for the elderly to decrease
their food intake.

Feeling great is important at any time of your life. Stay young
at heart longer! Enjoy a gentle program of healthy exercise at
Franklin. Our new Young at Heart Membership is designed to meet
your individual needs and give you the help and encouragement
you need to keep your body active and healthy.

The administrators and vol-
unteers for metropolitan De-
troit's kosher Meals On Wheels
program are very aware of this.
Besides being well-balanced, the
meals have to taste good and
look good "or nobody is going to
eat anything," says Scott Young,
director of Food and Nutritional
Services at Federation Apart-
ments in Oak Park. Even
though no one claims to have
found the mystical fountain of
youth, finding a way to slow the cc'\
aging process hasn't been aban-
doned. What nutrition science
is discovering is that older adults
do have special nutritional needs
that, when met, can help people
maintain an active lifestyle.
The food industry has caught
on to this concept and is devel-
oping products and services that
appeal to older adults. Watch for
more to come.
Developing sound eating hab-
its and a healthy lifestyle re-
mains up to the individual.
Healthy eating doesn't mean giv-
ing up foods we like. We just need
to learn how to balance our food
choices, fitting in our traditional
favorites with the foods that
really count.
The whole point is to make
healthy choices that fit our
lifestyle so we can do the things
we want to do.
