CALL 1-800-MEL-FARR 24 Hour Information Center in our Classified Section • So you're sitting around one nightrith a yen for some good Jewish cooking, but your moth- er is in Arizona and your moth- er-in-law isn't speaking to you. What to do? Why not switch on your com- puter and check out some of the on-line Jewish and kosher recipe databases? Cyber-bon vivants long ago discovered this intriguing fact: the Internet, a kind of interac- tive, do-it-yourself publisher, is well suited to user-generated cookbooks that can be browsed, searched and copied by users around the world. To see how this works, check out three Jewish cooking areas that may improve the cluslity of your cuisine. On the Jewish Communica- tion Network — a World Wide Web site with all kinds of Jewish goodies — a food section cur- rently includes recipes ranging from candied yams and tsimmes to chocolate challah. Visitors are invited to submit their own fa- vorites. Check it out at http:/ /www..jcn18.com/ and then follow the menus to the food section. Or try the Jewish CONENIuni- ty Online section of American Online, the much-in-the-news on- line service. Here you'll find a nicely categorized database of recipes (dairy, meat, parve, hol- iday fare, etc.), as well as the usu- al articles on kashrut. Most of the recipes here seem to be copied from cookbooks, but the JCOMM folks are trying to get a user recipe database started. You need to be an AOL sub- scriber to get to the Jewish COM- Munity Online; give AOL a call at 1-800-729-4499 for a startup disk. Another calorically rich re- source for Jewish cooks is the Jewish Food List, an Internet "mailing list" that will send reg- ular updates, including recipes, right to your electronic mailbox. Or you can browse the list's recipe archives — vast and mouthwatering — by setting your browser to: http://www.es- kimo.com/jefffree/recipes/ If you like what you see, you can sign up for the recipe mail- ing list right on the Web site. Bon Appetit! ❑ But you can acquire a remedi- al education the easy way on the World Wide Web by starting your day with the World Zionist Or- ganization's "This Month in Jew- ish History" site.. The page opens with a calen- dar of the current *month; click on the date, and read some of the events that occurred on that day in ages past. For example: On Jan. 17, 1670, the burghers of Metz de- cided to get rid of all their Jews. To that end, they concocted a rit- ual murder charge against Raphael Levy, a respected mem- ber of the community. Levy, needless to say, didn't get a fancy L.A. trial; he was tor- tured and burned alive. But the end of the story wasn't quite so bleak. The royal council later called his death 'judicial murder" and reversed the decision to ex- pel the Jews. Not surprisingly, a very high proportion of the events listed on the Web site involved expulsions, pogroms and other disasters — in other words, the warp and woof of Jewish history. The information, based on Be-. yond Time and History by Eli Birnbaum, is straightforward and basic; you don't need a de- gree in Jewish studies to follow. So start your day off with some Jewish education. Set your browser to: http://www.orgil/en- countr/hsthtm . ❑ Bomb Suspect Trial Begins Moscow (JTA) — Trial proceed- ings have begun against a man accused of bombing the Jewish community center in Yaroslavl. AIL explosive charge equiva- lent to more than 2 pounds of TNT was used in April's attack in Yaroslavl, which is located about 130 miles northeast of Moscow. The bombing caused no in- juries, but led to $40,000 in dam- age to the community center. Aleksandr Sypin, a 29-year- old unemployed man, is facing charges of hooliganism in the tri- al, which is being held in Yaroslavl. If convicted, he could receive a maximum of three years' in prison. Mr. Sypin was a member of Derzhava, Russian for "Power," a small Yaroslavl-based group of ultranationalist youths. In the 1980s, he was a mem- ber of Pamyat, or "Memory," Jews have a long and fascinating history, but most of us are which at the time was Russia's shamefully ignorant of all but a largest ultranationalist, anti-Se- mitic organization. few highlights.
