Alban Butler's The Lives of the Saints, Valentine was said to be a priest who as- sisted other Catholic martyrs during the reign of Claudius of Goth. His refusal to renounce his religion led to a beating with clubs and an eventual behead- ing in 269 C.E. Other legends told through- out the centuries dictate that Valentine refused the Roman emperor's edict to cease per- forming marriages so as to in- crease the number of single men to serve in the army. Valentine was captured and sentenced to prison for this crime. During his jail term, Valen- tine allegedly became friends with the jailer's blind daughter, who often brought him food and messages. He supposedly signed one of his last communications with the girl, whom he had cured of her blindness, "From your Valentine." Another legend, its existence documented in the poetry of Geoffrey Chaucer, has it that the day holds some mystical power of nature which forced birds to select their mates on Feb. 14. A combination of these histo- ries and legends serves as the basis of the current ritual of Valentine's Day. To mark the day, couples of all religions for centuries have exchanged cards of love, the first American-made line debuting in 1849. Current estimates by greet- ing card companies contend that 925 million valentines are ex- changed today in the United States alone, making it second behind Christmas as the holi- day for which greeting cards are exchanged. The cards themselves have evolved from handmade items decorated with lace and satin ribbons to whole lines of hu- morous and serious Valentine cards. "Valentine's Day has become a multicultural, cross-cultural holiday of love," said Marianne McDermott of the Greeting Card Association, an umbrella group for card manufacturers. While it's a pretty safe bet that Jews also celebrate ro- mance and love on this day, none of the 24 companies that manufacture cards for Jewish holidays is planning a line of Jewish Valentine cards. Carol Weinstock Silverander, the owner and founder of the Santa Barbara, Calif.-based Ethnographics, said she has never been asked to manufac- ture a Jewish Valentine's Day card since her line of ethnic greeting cards debuted with a Jewish line 10 years ago. "People who celebrate Valen- tine's Day don't feel they have to make it Jewish or not Jewish," she said. "It is just about ro- mance." C]
