FLEISCHMAN, 71, former Detroiter of Manhattan, N.Y., died Jan. 31. Mr. Fleischman worked in the family-owned Arthur Fleischman Carpet Company. He played a key role in the Detroit Institute of Arts. In 1956 he was invited to be a trustee of the Founders Soci- ety of the DIA and was named benefactor of the museum the following year. In 1962, he was appointed by the mayor to be president of the Arts Commis- sion. His tenure saw many in- novative programs introduced at the institute. In addition to the DIA, the Fleischman were major sup- porters of the British Museum as well as the Metropolitan Mu- seum of Art in New York. They also donated a large portion of their antiquities collection to the J. Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, Calif. Mr. Fleischman founded the ROBERT L.
