"This was originally a sugar
cane farm," explained manager
Adir Shoshan. He and his partner
Ehud Peikes have been the man-
agers of the Puerto Rican compa-
ny since its start 16 years ago.
After the sugar cane was
cleared, mango trees were plant-
ed. In this climate, the trees flour-
ished and the business grew.
What started as 500 acres has
grown to 2,000 acres. It encom-
passes 110,000 mango trees on
five farms which produce a whop-
ping 200 million boxes of mangos
each year.
"In Israel it would be impos-
sible to do this," said Mr.
Shoshan. In part, this is because
farms are much smaller. Israel
also doesn't have a climate which
would allow for year-round grow-
ing of mangos as Puerto Rico
does.
That's one reason the two Is-
raelis came to Puerto Rico. Mr.
Shoshan is an economist; Mr.
Peikes had been in the orange
business. Both were looking for
new opportunity and found it on
this tropical island.
"It was the chance of a life-
time," said Mr. Shoshan, taking
us on a brief tour of the farm as
he explained its history. As we
drove in his truck, we saw rows
and rows of mango trees, as far
as the eye could see.
From the time they're planted
until the mangos are packed and
shipped, Israeli methods are
used. "All the methods of irriga-
tion and cultivation are Israeli
methods," said the manager. In
the packing house, the machin-
ery is imported from Israel. Even
the packing boxes are from Israel.
Besides the Israeli manager,
three agronomists from Israel
work on the farms. Yair Aron,
who is chief agronomist, earned
his doctorate in agriculture in
Israel and has been with the corn-
pony 12 years; two other agrono-
mists came more recently.
All of them work long hours as
they supervise every stage of the
mango growing, from spraying to
picking and packing the mangos,
"It's very hard work, but very sat-
isfying," said Mr. Shoshan, whose
day begins at 5 a.m. Besides liv-
ing on the farm whenever he's
needed, he also lives in Florida
— and still goes to Israel often.
In fact, in the early years, he
"commuted" regularly between
Puerto Rico and Israel.
He welcomes visitors to the
farm. On Tu B'Shevat, for in-
stance, a Jewish group from San
Juan's Conservative congrega-
tion toured the farms and even
picked their own mangos after-
ward. 'They really enjoyed it and
were surprised to see all the fa-
cilities we have," said Mr.
Shoshan.
"Anyone who wants to visit is
welcome. We are very proud that
we're an Israeli company. And
we're proud to show people what
we've done in Puerto Rico."
