SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Planning to get a flu vaccination?
Bear in mind that its effectiveness
depends on how stressed you are
at the time of the shot, say re-
searchers at Ohio State Univer-
sity.
The researchers found that el-
derly people who are caregivers
for dementia patients are half as
likely to get quick protection from
a flu shot as seniors who aren't re-
sponsible for someone else's
health. These findings are further
evidence that people's immune
systems are weakened by stress-
ful circumstances.
"Providing care for a spouse
with dementia is remarkably
stressful," says Jan Kiecolt-Glaser,
professor of psychiatry and psy-
chology at OSU. "We've found in
a variety of ways that the stress
of care-giving appears to be as-
sociated with poor immune func-
tion."
Dr. Kiecolt-Glaser and her col-
leagues studied the levels of anti-
bodies against the influenza virus
in blood samples drawn from re-
search subjects. Only 38 percent
of the caregivers showed adequate
levels of the antibodies.
Despite the effect of stress on a
flu shot's effectiveness, the re-
searchers still urge caregivers to
be vaccinated. If they become in-
fected, they're likely have a less
severe bout of the flu.
What's the lesson here for care-
givers and other people who face
stress in their daily lives? Take
measures to mitigate stress and
you'll boost your immune system
at the same time. One quick way
to improve things is a hearty
laugh.
Reducing stress, and staying
healthy during flu season, could
be as easy as watching a few fun-
ny videos. It can stimulate im-
mune-cell activity, say Kenneth
Dachman and Joen Pritchard
Kinnan in "The Self-Health Hand-
book".
"In one study by a psychologist
at a New England college, stu-
dents who coped with their prob-
lems humorously had higher
levels of immunoglobulin A - a
substance that fights viruses -
than did students who couldn't see
anything funny in their predica-
ments."
Another way to boost your im-
mune system is to consume foods
rich in vitamins A, C and E, as
well as zinc and lipotropics. Next
time you visit the grocery store,
stock up on wheat germ, nuts,
seeds, liver, green leafy vegeta-
bles, carrots, yams, citrus fruits,
lentils and brown rice. 0
