Rely On Food For
Calcium Intake
ALISON ASHTON
SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS
For years, nutritionists have
urged people to get vitamins and
minerals from food rather than
vitamin pills. Now, a study pub-
lished in the American Journal of
Clinical Nutrition backs up that
wisdom.
In a four-year osteoporosis-pre-
vention study, researchers found
that women who consumed skim
milk improved their intake of pro-
tein, potassium, magnesium,
phosphorus, riboflavin, thiamin
and zinc - in addition to precious
calcium. Women who relied on
supplements only improved their
intake of calcium and sodium.
"Diets low in calcium are typ-
ically low in other nutrients, too,"
says Dr. Robert P. Heaney of
Creighton University in Omaha,
Neb. "If you rely on a calcium sup-
plement, you will miss out on oth-
er important nutrients."
Moreover, he warns that, in
some people, a single high dose of
calcium can hinder the absorp-
tion of other nutrients, such as
iron and zinc.
"We need to break out of to-
day's 'solve it with a pill' mental-
ity," Dr. Heaney says. "Food is
always the best source of nutri-
tion for our bodies because it helps
meet total nutrient needs. Food
provides balance among the var-
ious essential nutrients, and you
don't run the risk of megadosing."
/-- Heaney contends it's simply
easier to get good nutrition from
food. "It's not that hard to re-
member to eat, but it's easy to for-
get a pill."
Bulimia Overlooked
A new Ohio State University
study reveals that family practi-
tioners dramatically underdiag-
nose bulimia in their patients.
In a survey of 600 family
physicians, one-third reported
never diagnosing bulimia in a
patient, and 60 percent said they
did not have any bulimic pa-
tients at the time of the study.
Researchers say this is incon-
sistent with the rate of eating
disorders among women.
"Recent studies show that the
lifetime prevalence of eating dis-
orders among women is about 5
percent," says OSU's Lawrence
L. Gabel, who co-authored the
study. "Thus, one might expect
that virtually all family physi-
cians would have patients who
are bulimic."
One reason why bulimia is so
overlooked is that it's difficult to
detect.
