We sizzled on the beach as teenagers, smoked and drank our way through our twenties. Fortunately, our anti-aging treatments do more than simply camouflage the damage that's already been done." Dr. Donald Powell, president of the American Institute for Preventive Medicine in Farm- ington Hills, finds that he is al- ways telling patients to complete their prescription. "Too often, a patient will stop taking the pills in the middle because he's feeling better, and then two weeks later there's a flare up of the original problem. "What's really surprising is how many people take someone else's prescription. That's just asking for trouble. Who knows what your reaction may be! Pa- tients will recover more quickly and stay healthier if they work with their physicians and phar- macists — the medication ex- perts." Equally important is the pa- tient accepting responsibility for the growing number of nonpre- scription medicines that offer all of us greater opportunity to treat more of the aches and illnesses that are likely to appear as we age. As we live longer, work and take a more active role in our own health care, theneed grows to become better informed.about self-care. ❑ Making The Most Of Medications * Keep an up-to-date list of all the medications you're present- ly taking. Show the list to all physicians you visit. Write down any problems you have with the medicine so you can discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist. * The prescription you take to the drugstore must be legible. If you can't read what your physician hands you, chances are the pharmacist will have trouble reading it too. Ask your physician to rewrite it clearly. * Prescriptions should include a notation of the purpose of the drug, such as to relieve cough- ing. Sometimes the name of one drug is very similar to the name of a very different med- ication. * Make sure the directions for a prescription are clear and specific: how much to take, how often to take it, what to do if you miss a dose, and how many refills are permitted. * If you skipped a dose of your medication, don't try to catch up by doubling the next dose on your own. * Don't keep old medications. * Store medications in a dry area, out of the reach of chil- dren. * Know what food or drugs you shouldn't take with the med- ication. * Find out if there are any ac- tivities that should be avoided while taking the medication.
