Jewry's Role in
Human Advancement

The scale of human invention in ancient times, from
sewing needles to Egyptian pyramids, has its contempo-
rary artifacts from tiny power cells to great bridges. In
the latter case, creative minds of Jewish origin have
themselves written their names in history.

The quality of
life, and life itself, de-
pended for many on the
inventive outpouring of a
relatively unknown Jew-
ish research scientist.
Samuel Ruben's revolu-
tionary sealed mercury
batteries powered hear-
ing aids and earlier heart pacemakers. His electrical
components were indispensable for operating major home
appliances, as well as radio and TV sets of past and
recent vintage. His discoveries have left their mark on
much that populates the modern age--from wristwatches
and space satellites to electrical motors, automatic
cameras and artificial voice boxes. The self-taught high
school graduate with over 300 patents to his name went
on in later life to invent the alkaline battery, known and
used the world-over.

BAIS MOSHE DOWNTOWN
SYNAGOGUE

He built the "unbuildable" Mackinac bridge that
defied design and construction for a century. Michigan's
five mile feat of engineering was the world's longest
suspension bridge when opened to traffic in 1957--the
graceful masterwork of David Steinman, a scientific and
aesthetic triumph. By the end of his career, the professor
of civil engineering in Idaho and New York completed
more than 400 bridge projects on five continents. The
Russian born engineer also planned the reconstruction of
the historic Brooklyn Bridge and published poetry to the
soaring splendor of his craft and art.

Dear Reader,
I am deeply grateful to learn that a highly re-
spected orthodox organization and individuals have
begun to share the ideals of disseminating word of
Jewry's Role in Human Advancement. Welcome to our
open forum in proclaiming the majesty of our inspiring
history of which less has been said than of our tragic past.
This column is meant to unveil the Jewish presence which
has greatly enriched the world's well-being, and reflect
the continuity of our people since ancient times. We
must come to applaud the contributions of our kinsmen
through history and embrace a sense of the worthiness
arid value of ourselves as a people.
