tional Jewish organizations which
in essence reflected the divisions
within the community on the
path of peace process."
His complaint is that Klein
sent copies of his letter to a num-
ber of prominent people in the
Jewish community and, as a re-
sult, "the ADL was hit with let-
ters of protest and the story was
widely covered in the Jewish
press."
But surely, that is the very
essence and purpose of free
speech. The right to free speech
means that the ADL has a right
to invite Thomas Friedman or
anyone else it chooses if it thinks
it appropriate to do so.
With respect to the appropri-
ateness of the invitation, person-
ally I was amazed that the ADL,
an organization whose work I had
long respected and that I consid-
ered supportive of Israel, would
invite Thomas Friedman, who
has almost always been very neg-
ative on Israel. Morton Klein
should be commended, not con-
demned, for having raised the is-
sue.

can, Jewish, Korean, Chaldean,
Arab, Armenian, whatever —
has to worry about surviving in
an inner-city neighborhood. But
why should the rules be any dif-
ferent for the retail outsider? The
struggle to survive, while hard
to relate to here in the suburbs,
is very real.
Mayor Archer, it is not enough
to bring casinos and high-visi-
bility businesses into Detroit.
Yes, the image of the city is im-
portant on the largely white, cor-
porate level. But the livability of
Detroit has to be made better
from the inside out.
Neighbors, retailers and any
visitor should not have to wor-
ry about survival while they shop
or walk or live in our inner cities.
By the way, know what the
verdict of the O.J. Simpson civ-
il trial was on Tuesday night?
Sure you do. Know what Presi-
dent Clinton was talking about
in his State of the Union ad-
dress? Maybe.
The night that the president
is talking about racial equality
and building bridges, a largely
white jury rules against this
country's most famous black de-
fendant. Already sides are being
taken along racial lines.
There's poison left behind. 0
