Hollander. He commented that
NFTY-Michigan members "ap-
proach services in a much more
— not serious — but respectful
manner, like it's a very special
time, which is unique from what
I've seen in other regions."
The weekend featured moving
erev Shabbat, Shabbat morning
and Havdalah services run by

Temple Emanu-El Temple Youth
(TEMTY), the host group, and
participated in by everyone.
"The energy and enthusiasm
from the multitude of new mem-
bers astounds me. The first con-
clave experience, which can be
something intimidating, was just
the opposite. [First-time conclave
goers] jumped right into the mag-

ical experience that NFTY has to
offer," said NFTY Michigan
Membership Vice President Avi-
va Pearlman. Approximately 25
percent of conclave goers were
new members or freshmen, who
enjoyed the large semiformal
dance after Havdalah on Satur-
day night.
Upon arriving at the dance,

NFTY-MI members were greet-
ed by TEMTY parents dressed as
waiters and waitresses, serving
hors d'oeuvres, drinks and din-
ner. NFTYites commonly take
advantage of the opportunity to
wear different things than would
be worn to a school dance because
they feel so comfortable among
friends. More than a few tuxedos,

leisure suits and suspenders were
worn.
What NFTY's Winter Con-
clave was really about, however,
was forming and maintaining
friendships. The weekend was
not merely to educate about Kab-
balah; it served to help form fu-
ture leaders for the Reform
Jewish community.
