he Jewish Community Cen-
ter has hired the Maccabi
Games coordiriator from
1990 for the same position
for the 1998 games.
Beth Robinson Keliman, 32,
daughter of 1990 and 1998 games
co-chair Jay Robinson, began
restoring the old 1990 basement
office this week at the Maple-
Drake JCC.
The JCC North American Mac-
cabi Youth Games will bring to
Detroit an estimated 2,700-3,000
Jewish teen-agers in August 1998
for a week of athletic and social
events.
As a full-time JCC employee,
Ms. Robinson Keliman will coor-
dinate volunteer and scheduling
efforts for the games. The office in-
stalled a new phone line on Tues-
day— (810) 661-7722 —to begin
accepting names of host families
and volunteers for the 1998
games.
At the moment, Ms. Robinson
Keliman is the only games em-
ployee. At the height of prepara-

years she did instructional design
and corporate training for Childs
Consulting Associates.
David Sorkin, JCC executive
director, said Ms. Robinson Kell-
man's previous experience will be
a major asset. In addition, she is
starting the job 20 months ahead

of the 1998 games. In 1990, she
opened the JCC Maccabi office 16
months ahead of the games. ❑

what we were working for all
those months. This time it will be
easier, because I have a picture of
1990 in my mind. It will also be
more exciting and bigger."
After the 1990 games, Ms.
Robinson Keliman worked as a
synagogue administrator at Con-
gregation Beth Achim and then

tions just before the games in
1990, the JCC Maccabi office had
three full-time and a number of
part-time workers.
"As long as the work is devel-
oping materials and working with
the Maccabi committees," Ms.
Robinson Kellman said, "it is a
one-person job. But as soon as we
start working with our guests or
we start receiving an overflow of

from 1990.

The budget for the office and
the 1998 games has yet to be fi-
nalized. Jay Robinson recently es-
timated the games could cost $1
million, funded by corporate spon-
sorships and contributions.
Ms. Robinson Keliman said she
has concerns about the games, but
based on her 1990 experience "at
least I know I can do it. And it's so
much fun.
"Before the 1990 games, it was
all numbers. Then, when the ath-
letes arrived, it made me realize
