United Nations force in south
Lebanon since 1978. Also, the
Lebanese government is too
weak to sign or enforce anything
without Big Brother Syria's en-
dorsement, and Uncle Sam is in
no mood to risk American lives
in Lebanon again after burning
his fingers there in 1982.
Defense Minister Yitzhak
Mordechai flung the gauntlet
back in Mr. Kahalani's face. He
accused the internal security
minister of undermining army
morale and hurting the bereaved
families by "sowing false illusions
that there is a magic solution to
the problem of southern
Lebanon."
Mr. Mordechai, a former chief
of the Northern Command,
added: "I don't see any possibili-
ty of a unilateral withdrawal ...
Any step in that direction would
bring the terror and Hizbollah to
the border fence, disrupting and
harming the lives of Israeli civil-
ians."

Then Ehud Barak, a former
chief of staff and Labor leader,
joined the debate.
Unilateral withdrawal, he ar-
gued, would weaken Israel and
strengthen Hizbullah. The solu-
tion had to be diplomatic, not mil-
itary. Israel, he said, must
resume negotiations with Syria
on the basis of land for peace.
Only then would Assad have an
incentive to rein in his Lebanese
allies.
This week, Damascus and
Jerusalem indeed seemed look-
ing for a way back to the table,
but slowly and suspiciously. But
questions remain: How much of
the Golan, which Israel has oc-
cupied since 1967, is Binyamin
Netanyahu's government ready
to trade? What kind of peace (and
security arrangements) is Assad
talking about?
Until they are answered, Is-
raeli soldiers will go on dying, the
television will lead with their fu-
nerals, and the nation
will continue to hold its breath
when the casualties are an-
nounced. ❑
