Jerusalem — In the nine months
since the end of Israel's unhap-
py "Grapes of Wrath" offensive,
23 Israeli soldiers have been
killed and 68 wounded in Hizbul-
lah ambushes in the self-pro-
claimed security zone of
Southern Lebanon. Of these to-
tals, four have died and 14 have
been hospitalized since the be-
ginning of 1997.
This week, two Israeli trans-
port helicopters collided in heavy
fog near the Lebanon border. All
73 soldiers aboard were killed.
Each funeral leads the radio
and television news. Grieving
parents, classmates and com-
rades in arms are interviewed.
"He was good at chemistry," they
say. "He loved football. He was
always ready to help people in
need." A girl friend sobs into the
camera.
The nation shares in the
pathos and the tragedy. Young
men, brave and patriotic, are
leaving their future on the rocky
hillsides across the Galilee bor-
der. In every household viewers
and listeners hold their breath
while the names of the cam ialties
are announced. If they don't have
a son in the army, they know
someone who does.
And the nation shares in the
humiliation. Most of the casual-
ties fall not in combat, but to in-
creasingly clever roadside bombs,
detonated from afar.
Avigdor Kahalani, a hero of
the 1973 Yom Kippur War and
now Israel's minister of internal
security, distilled the growing
frustration this week. He com-
plained that the soldiers were
"sitting ducks" for the Islamic
militiamen.
Hizbullah, the fanatical Shi'ite
"Party of God," wants to drive the
Israeli "invader" out of Lebanon.
But it also is keeping the pot boil-
ing for Syria, which aims to bring
Israel back to the negotiating
table on President Hafez el-As-
sad's terms. So the battle for the
Golan Heights is being waged in
southern Lebanon.
And the implications of that
'battle are wide spread. Foreign
Minister David Levy revealed
last weekend that 30 transport
planes had delivered Iranian
arms for Hizbullah via Damas-
cus since the end of the Grapes
of Wrath bombardment last
April.
