Israeli Court
Sentences Two

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli
court has sentenced two Hamas
terrorists to consecutive, double-
life sentences for their involve-
ment in the suicide bombings in
Jerusalem and Ashkelon last
February.
A Hamas suicide bomber
claimed 26 victims in the Feb-
ruary bombing of the No. 18 bus
near Jerusalem's central bus
station, an attack that wound-
ed 48 others.
Less than an hour later, a sec-
ond Hamas bomb exploded at a
soldiers' hitchhiking station near
Ashkelon, killing two, including
the bomber, and injuring 31.
The two Palestinians sen-
tenced were convicted of driving
the suicide-bombers to the at-
tack sites.
The two, Akram Ibrahim
Kawasama and Imand Rassam,
were residents of eastern
Jerusalem's Ras Al-Amud neigh-
borhood, an army spokesman
said.

Israeli President
Visits India

Jerusalem (JTA) — Ezer Weiz-
man has become the first Israeli
president to make an official vis-
it to India.
Israeli officials said they ex-
pected at least three agree-
ments, in such areas as trade
and cultural exchanges, to be
signed during a weeklong visit.
Bilateral trade has grown be-
tween Israel and India since
they established full diplomatic
relations in 1991. The two coun-
tries signed a trade accord in
January 1996 aimed at boosting
bilateral commerce.
India also has become a pop-
ular travel destination for young
Israelis after completion of their
compulsory military service.
During his visit, Mr. Weiz-
man was expected to discuss the
fate of six Israelis, who are jailed
in India on various drug-relat-
ed charges.
For Mr. Weizman, the trip to
India also bore personal signif-
icance.
It marked his return to the
country where he served as a
British air force pilot 50 years
ago.
