..,:ww$Earm Tired? Stressed? Take a few years offl! school, the feeling of the grade be- ing enough," said Julie Leonard, 46, a physical education and art teacher at a middle school in Peo- ria, Ill. "Kids expect a big reward." Respondents said the major differences between them and their students are that today's students have less respect for au- thority and others, there's less family support and parental in- volvement, and single-parent families lack structure and sta- bility. "Some kids have gone so long without the necessities they've become accustomed to it," said Mary Medley, 42, a social studies teacher. 'They say, 'I can do what I want' ... whereas, when we went to school, if we didn't get our work done, we were afraid we'd get in trouble at school or they (the school) would call home." In fact, school has to do more, Ms. Medley said: "We're every- thing." "The role of classroom teach- ers is changing. They fill a gap where the family can't, for what- ever reason," said Janice Gould, whose students at Lawrence Hall Youth Services in Chicago are be- havioral disordered and emo- tionally disturbed children who have been abused or neglected. "Our numbers (in the Lawrence program) are increas- ing (and) that's an indication that families are in need of more ser- vice," Ms. Gould said. "Education must adapt its services to meet the needs of our students." There are bright spots — even to such seeming negatives as sin- gle-parent families. Kids from sin- gle-parent families may be more independent. "Kids are encouraged to be more independent and think for themselves at a younger age," said Karen Beuhler, a 41-year- old teacher on leave to pursue a doctorate. "Having Mom home isn't the answer. You need a lit- tle bit different an arrangement of time. Kids have more inde- pendence, and when they're with family, it has to be quality time. It takes a lot more work." Although the survey respons- es indicate teachers are discour- aged, they seem determined. "If we give up, who's going to take over?" Ms. Medley asked. "We have to keep going. Kids need someone to rely on." VISAGE ANTI-AGING INT'L Specialists in Skin Rejuvenation Devoted exclusively to the finest anti-aging cosmeceuticals from around the world.
