Soy Suggested
For Women

ALISON ASHTON
SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Women approaching menopause
would be smart to add a little
tofu to their diets. That's the ad-
vice of Dr. Mark Messina, au-
thor of The Simple Soybean and
Your Health (Avery Publishing
Group). He points to recent stud-
ies that have shown ample in-
take of soy protein can reduce
menopausal symptoms, such as
hot flashes, as well as reduce
cholesterol levels and the risk of
breast, colon and prostate can-
cer.
Part of the current interest in
soy products has been sparked
by the fact that Japanese
women, for whom tofu is a di-
etary staple, have half the
incidence of hot flashes and
night sweats that American
and Canadian women experi-
ence.
Women participating in a cur-
rent Tufts University study are
eating 75 grams to 100 grams of
tofu a day – about what's found
in a typical Japanese diet –
to help researchers determine
its effectiveness against men-
opausal symptoms.
Other studies show that even
in small amounts tofu can offer
some relief.
Vegetarians have long relied
on soy foods as a source of
protein and calcium, but soy is
easy to add to any diet. It's read-
ily available, even in supermar-
kets, as tofu, miso, textured
vegetable protein, soy milk and
tempeh.
Try crumbled tofu in place of
ground beef in lasagna, chili or
even tacos, or use soy milk in-
stead of cow's milk in baked
goods, where it adds a moist,
rich texture.
