Top CEOs
Come To Israel

Jerusalem (JPFS) — Prime
Minister Binyamin Netanyahu
will invite some of the world's
top business people to Israel
during 1997 to discuss expand-
ing their interests in the coun-
try, according to a government
source.
The list of CEOs, chairpeople
and presidents of companies in
the United States, Europe and
Asia include Wall Street fi-
nancier George Soros, Microsoft
Corp. president Bill Gates,
Itochu Corp. president and CEO
Minoru Murofushi, Sara Lee
Corp. chairman and CEO John
Bryan, Lyonnaise des Eaux SA
CEO Jerome Monod, Volkswa-
gen AG CEO Ferdinand Piech,
Siemens AG CEO Heinrich von
Pierer, General Motors Corp.
president and CEO John Smith,
Perot Systems Corp. Morton
Meyerson, and General Electric
Co. chairman and CEO John
Welch.
Mr. Netanyahu is already
scheduled to meet Mr. Gates in
Davos, Switzerland, during the
annual World Economic Forum.
Mr. Murofushi will in all prob-
ability also be in Switzerland.
All those on Mr. Netanyahu's
list already have interests in Is-
rael.

Court Cancels
Ice Cream Tariffs

Jerusalem (JPFS) — The
Jerusalem District Court can-
celled the tariffs on imported ice
cream, ending the two-year legal
battle between the importers of
Haagen Daaz ice cream and the
Ministry of Industry and Trade.
In 1995, Regent, which holds
the license to market Haagen
Daaz in Israel, filed an appeal
against the Ministry of Trade,
charging that tariff rates levied
on imported ice cream were
mainly influenced by pressure
from local ice cream manufac-
turers Tnuva and Strauss.
The company requested the
court to lift the tariff on import-
ed ice cream.
In her verdict, Judge Judith
Zur criticized the Ministry of In-
dustry and Trade, Tnuva and
Strauss, pointing out that the
purpose of the tariff is solely in-
tended to protect local manufac-
turers. She said the Ministry of
Industry and Trade's decision to
impose the levy is against basic
rights of purchase and occupa-
tion.
"It seems that the fact that the
import is of especially high qual-
ity ice cream is, in fact, a positive
incentive to encourage the qual-
ity of local manufacturers' ice
cream," said Judge Zur. ❑
