Foundation in Los Angeles —
opened the door to the reorga-
nization, according to museum
sources.
"It's been almost four years
since the museum opened," said
Walter Reich, the museum's di-
rector. "We now know better
what works, what doesn't work
so well. It's time for the organi-
zation to strengthen operations."
The creation of a Center for
Advanced Holocaust Studies, he
said, will "help us serve as the
hub for scholarly Holocaust stud-
ies throughout the country,
perhaps even beyond our bor-
ders. It will create a center with-
in the museum that is focused
purely on scholarship, that isn't
weighed down by other activi-
ties that really belong to other
parts of the institution, such as
collecting."
Holocaust scholar Deborah
Lipstadt, who is a member of the
Holocaust Council, agreed that
the museum's scholarly functions
will be enhanced.
"I see it as an attempt to in-
troduce some organization that's
been sorely lacking," she said in
an interview. "Because the mu-
seum has been in such high de-
mand, there was never a time to
step back and see how things
were operating. There was a lot
of duplication; things were pret-
ty topsy-turvy."

NO cellular contracts, NO credit checks, and NO monthly bills.
(Which, in the Midwest, could really come in handy.)

Michael Berenbaum

Other observers say the reor-
ganization strengthens the hand
of Mr. Reich in the museum:
From the time he took over in
1995, there was an element of
competition between the former
psychotherapist and Mr. Beren-
baum, who many expected to win
the top job two years ago.
`This change enhances Reich's
position, and makes it very clear
he's in charge," said one Holo-
caust Council member. "It also
expands the responsibilities of
Sara Bloomfield [director of pub-
lic programs, who will now take
on expanded responsibilities].
She's a damned good adminis-
t!ator, which is what the opera-
bon needg." 0
