SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Jewish

members don't top the
list, but they do extraordinarily
well in the ranking of the 50 rich-
est members of the House and
Senate, an annual exercise by the
respected Capitol Hill newspa-
per, Roll Call.
According to this year's list,
four of the richest 10 House and
Senate members are Jewish.
Sen. Herb Kohl (D-Wis.), who
made his money with a regional
supermarket chain and owns the
Milwaukee Bucks basketball
team, reportedly is worth a cool
quarter-billion dollars, according
to the Roll Call report; that ranks
him third in the big-bucks sweep-
stakes. (Who's No. 1? Sen. John
Kerry, a Massachusetts Democ-
rat who married the widow of for-
mer Sen. John Heinz (R-Pa.) —
the heir to the Heinz ketchup and
pickle fortune.)
Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-
Calif.), who is married to a
wealthy real estate investor, was
the fifth richest, at $50 million,
and data processing magnate
Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-N.J.)
was sixth with $40 million. Rep.
Norm Sisisky (D-Va.), a soft
drink bottler, tied for eighth with
$30 million.
The Roll Call report also pro-
vided an intriguing glimpse of
how Jewish legislators are fully
integrated into the Capitol Hill
mainstream. In reporting on Rep.
Ruben Hinojosa (D-Texas), the
paper said that he is "the first mi-
nority to land on our list."
So what are the Jews, a ma-
jority? ❑
