S 13113 rIP President's Column by Neal F. Zalenko, President, /NF Council of Michig.-c; Ji INI KEREN KAYEMETH LEISRAEL 3 ver 2,000 years ago, against overwhelming odds, a small band ofJewish visionaries and fighters vanquished their enemies, reclaimed their homeland and rededicated the Temple in Jerusalem, a miracle. In our own lifetime we have seen the rebirth of the modern State of Israel, another miracle. And now, at a recent meeting of National Leadership, the World Chairman of Keren Kayemeth Leisrael (Jewish National Fund) , Moshe Rivlin, reported that the population of Israel should double by the year 2020. This too will be another miracle. Thanks to you, the Jewish National Fund is the vehicle by which Jews around the world are able to support and ac- complish these miracles. JNF, from the beginning, bought the land, developed it, planted trees where experts said trees could not grow, built reservoirs and dams, built the summer camps that provide Israel's children a haven and cleared land for hous- ing sites when tens of thousands of Russian and Ethiopian Jews came to Israel. JNF is there. JNF forges the bond between the Jewish Homeland and tens of thousands of students and young professionals in America. Will the doubled population live in the cities or the desert? The desert used to begin north of Beersheva. You could actually see the line where it began. Now, because of JNF, the desert is being cultivated, reclaimed and all around this ancient city, founded by Abraham, there are trees, agriculture, communities and a growing economy es- sential to Israel's future. Together, we will bring the modern Jewish state into the 21st century. JNF helped Israel come into being, now we face new challenges in the desert. They were so moved by what they had seen and experienced that they joined Miracle Mission II. The love of the land of Israel that was nurtured throughout Marilou Berman's life created a re- spect and admiration of the people and the land and the improvements at- tributed to the efforts of the Jewish National Fund. As a memorial tribute to their loving wife and mother, who died January 12, 1996, Marvin and his children, Randi, Deborah, Steven and Michael, de- cided to establish the Mar- ilou Berman Memorial Grove in the American In- dependence Park outside the city of Jerusalem.
