calorie beverage consumption

nificant increase in childhood
and adolescent obesity," say re-
searchers. Other risks of sipping
too many 'junk drinks" include
deficient calcium intake, tooth
decay and dehydration.
But smart parents can steer
kids away from these nutrition-
al saboteurs. High-calorie fruit
juices can be diluted with
sparkling water. Sugary fruit
drinks (usually made with an ap-
ple- or grape juice base) should
be replaced with 100 percent
fruit juice drinks.
Healthy drinks, including sin-
gle-serving water bottles, should
be easily accessible for kids.

Women Worry
Over Estrogen
Menopausal women who are
considering hormone replace-
ment therapy should be wary of
the double-edge sword of long-
term exposure to estrogen.
An article in the current issue
of The Journal of the American
Medical Association reports that
high bone mineral density (an
advantage that comes with
HRT) has been linked with an
increased risk of breast cancer.
Recent studies have shown
that estrogen replacement ther-
apy can reduce heart disease
and increase bone density,
which prevents osteoporosis.
However, breast cancer has
been shown to grow in response
to estrogen.
What does this mean to a
woman weighing the pros and
cons of HRT? First, women with
a family history of breast cancer
are not good candidates for
HRT. Moreover, women with
normal bone density and estro-
gen may also want to forgo the
therapy.
"Women with normal bone
mineral density and with nor-
mal or high levels of estrogen
that is produced within the body
could increase their risk of
breast cancer if they take sup-
plemental estrogen for the pre-
vention of osteoporosis or
cardiovascular disease," warns
Jane Cauley, associate profes-
sor of epidemiology at the Uni-
versity of Pittsburgh's Graduate
School of Public Health.

PERMANENT IMPROVEMENTS
When the experiences of all ortho-
dontists nationwide are taken into ac-
count, it is fair to say that their treatment
has a 95 percent improvement rate. As
with any part of the body, the teeth and
jaws are constantly changing and adapt-
ing. In those cases where the orthodon-
tist is able to effect growth guidance, the
results are usually permanent. While
jaw relationships affecting facial contours
can be expected to remain for life, there
are certain types of facial patterns that
may continue to change past adolesence.
If this happens to be the case with a par-
ticular child, the orthodontist will make
sure to discuss any detrimental growth
indications with the parents. Conscien-
tious wear of a retainer as a followup to
the primary treatment will serve to min-
imize minor movement or relapse.
When braces are removed, the patient
often wears a retainer to hold the teeth
in position. Retainers are just as impor-
tant as braces in the treatment plan. The
patient will wear the retainer for as long
as it takes for the teeth to settle into a
better bite and for the bones and muscles
to adapt to the new dental arrangement.
