Nutrition Information
Center urges parents to wean
their children from soft drinks
and other nutritionally weak
beverages, which offer empty
calories and can contribute to
childhood obesity.
"Liquid intake seriously im-
pacts the overall diet of Ameri-

can children," says Barbara
Levine, director of the Nutrition
Information Center.
A new report from the center
shows that by 1994 the average
teen-ager drank 64.5 gallons of
soft drinks annually - three
times as much as teens drank in
1978. Soft-drink consumption
more than doubled among chil-
dren 6 to 11.
