Jerusalem (JTA) — The suit
Yitzhak Rabin wore on the night
he was assassinated is to be giv-
en to a center to preserve the slain
prime minister's memory.
The Israeli daily Ma'ariv ran a
photo of the dark suit, stained by
blood from Mr. Rabin's fatal
wounds, as well as his shirt, which
has a bullet hole in it.
Until now, Mr. Rabin's cloth-
ing from that Nov. 4 night in Tel
Aviv was being stored by the Na-
tional Crime Squad in Petach Tik-
va.
The Tel Aviv District Court is-
sued an order barring police from
destroying the suit and other ev-
idence from the case, which is
standard practice once a murder—/
case is closed.
Rabin's assassin, Yigal Amir,
is serving a life sentence plus 11
years for the murder and other
crimes.
The judge also ruled that the
police should retain the Beretta
pistol Mr. Amir used to shoot Mr.
Rabin, the bullets removed from
Mr. Rabin's body, the three spent
shells found at the scene of the,/
murder and the remaining bul-
lets in the gun's chamber.
The court said all the evidence
should be transferred to the State
Archives, until the Center for the
Preservation of Mr. Rabin's Mem-
ory is established.
Jerusalem (JTA) — Most Israeli
men are required to serve annu-
al reserve duty — unless of course,
they also happen to be the official
driver for Israel's first lady, Sara
Netanyahu.
Israel Television reported that
the driver, Ya'acov Azulai, was re-
cently called up for reserve duty,_/
Shortly after, an official letter—
from the Prime Minister's Office
asked the Israel Defense Force to
relieve him of his duties.
The lDF approved the decision,
but sources told the television that
it was not the first time such a re-
quest had been made for Mr. Ne-
tanyahu's driver.
Labor Knesset member
Ra'anan Cohen cried foul over the, _ '
disclosure, which comes against
the backdrop of a decrease in mo-
tivation among Israeli reservists
and active duty soldiers.
"Nowadays, you call up 400
people for reserve duty, and bare-
ly 20 show up. And here, the
prime minister, instead of setting
an example, makes sure to get the
driver an exemption."
The Prime Minister's Office,'
said in response that the request
was for a postponement only and
that Azulai would fulfill his re-
serve duties.
