'

skip this particular afternoon.
He said, No, we're going.'
"He was just so dedicated.
He'd call people all the time —
widows, people with problems,
religious Jews, secular Jews.
He'd find jobs for people or help
someone who needed money.
Up until his dying breath, he'd
do things like that."
Detroiter David Hermelin, a
world Jewish communal leader,
talks about Rabbi Levin's pres-
ence, calling it an "aura."
"In his eyes you saw com-
passion," said Mr. Hermelin.
"He was concerned for all the
Jewish people. For that reason,
so many people from all differ-
ent aspects of Jewish life came
around him. You also knew
-•• that the stewardship of the
Vaad was more than just
guardian of kashruth — you
had a chief rabbi."
For his grandson, Rabbi Yis-
roel Levin, every moment is
filled with thoughts of his
grandfather. He lives in the
house his grandfather once
lived in. The spiritual leader of
his grandfather's shul, he even
prays in the same spot. There
are scratches on the wood in the
shul which Rabbi Yisroel Levin
believes were made by his
grandfather.
"It humbles me, and makes
me think how unworthy I am
to be in this position," said Rab-
bi Levin. "On the other hand, it
strengthens me to continue the
mission of my grandfather. You
know the direction is set, and
this is what you have to do. It
keeps you pushed in the right
direction."
"My grandfather," said Rab-
bi Levin, "was a jewel in the
crown. "Whenever we would get
together, we'd all want to walk,
to tag along with him. It gave
you such great pride."
At a recent Yeshiva Beth
Yehudah dinner, the grandson
and his wife rode down an es-
calator. An older woman behind
them asked for their names.
When she heard the response,
she told Rabbi Levin that his
grandfather had officiated at
her wedding.
"You felt his greatness," the
grandson would say. "And it
made you feel good about your-
self and everyone around you."
Rabbi Leizer Levin didn't
speak to Orthodox, Conserva-
tive or Reform.
He did what the Chofetz
Chaim told him to do.
He spoke to Jews. ❑
