Sign language interpreters
have been a regular feature at
the temple's Shabbat services
for years. Ms. Silverman has
served in the role for the past
year, signing once a month on
a platform built for interpreters
in front of the bimah's podium.
Her parents, Walter and
Mary Hanes, belong to St.
John's Deaf Center in Warren,
with which Fr. McKenna and
Sister Chrenko are affiliated.
They and a group of 24 friends
and fellow parishioners came to
Alan's bar mitzvah, just as they
did for the Silvermans' wed-
ding.
"What was nice is, before we
even joined Emanu-El, we had
a sign language interpreter do
our wedding and [Temple
Emanu-El's emeritus] Rabbi
Milton Rosenbaum said it was
one of his most interesting ser-
vices because he'd never had an
interpreter there before," Ms.
Silverman said.
For Alan, a student at Norup
Middle School in Oak Park,
sign language is the only way
he can communicate with his
grandparents. It also came in
handy at his bar mitzvah.
"It helped me because I was
going a little fast, but I re-
membered [Sister Chrenko], so
I slowed down," he said. ❑
Judge White Picked
For Higher Court
President nominates her for U.S. Court of Appeals
Sixth Circuit in Cincinnati.
PHIL JACOBS EDITOR
udge Helene White was nominated by
President Bill Clinton to serve on the
U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Cir-
cuit in Cincinnati.
Judge White has been a judge on the
Michigan Court of Appeals since January
1993. She is a graduate of Barnard College
and the University of Pennsylvania Law
School. She served on the Wayne County Cir-
cuit Court for nearly 10 years as a trial judge.
The judge ran successfully for the Michi-
gan Court of Appeals in November 1992.
Upon confirmation for the federal position,
Judge White would become one of 16 judges
on the Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit,
which hears cases from Kentucky, Michigan,
Ohio and Tennessee.
Judge White is also known as an active
member of the Detroit Jewish community,
working with the United Jewish Appeal, Fed-
eration, the American Jewish Committee
and other organizations.
The next step in the confirmation process
will be interviews and hearings by the judi-

ciary committee of the U.S.
Senate.
"I'm very pleased," said
Judge White, 41. "It's sort of
like lightning striking. It's a
wonderful opportunity.
There are more people who
would make excellent judges
than there are positions."
There will be some over-
lap in the type of cases Judge
White would see on the fed-
eral level. The real differ-
ences, she said, are cases
where the federal govern-
ment has exclusive jurisdic-
tion. Family and probate
cases she sees now would
not be the sort of litigation
to come before a federal
judge.

the possible appointment
will infringe on the volunteer
time she gives to the Jewish community.
"I don't know exactly what the time and
travel demands will be," she said, "but you
make time for things important to you." ❑

So please pick up the telephone and give her a birthday call,
To show her that her new friends here are truly the best of all.
We want her to get a lot of calls, get the phone ringing of the hook,
But we couldn't print her number here, so in your directories
you'll have to look.
We thank you in advance for this, she'll be excited as can be,
You'll be a part of this unofficial way to help Ellen turn fifty!
