"There were also kids there
who were not necessarily over-
weight who just wanted to stay
fit," says Ms. Roberts. "Lacey
said they were really stimulat-
ing, exciting sessions." Now
that she's learned these life-long
skills, Lacey is looking forward
to going on a wilderness trip
this summer.
"When we were younger,
these programs weren't avail-

Like to ski? Area high school
racing teams, as well as those
just eager to learn how to race,
head to Mt Hood in Oregon for
a week of ski training. Or you
could choose the Zermatt Ski
Program, in Zermatt, Switzer-
land, which is designed to im-
prove the skills of the
intermediate to advanced racer.
Lacey Roberts, 16, of Birm-
ingham, chose a very different
path a couple of summers ago.
"She had suddenly gotten very
heavy, and wanted to take it
off," says her mom, Shelley
Roberts. She spent three weeks
at Camp Shane in Ferndale,
N.Y., a weight-loss program in a
camp setting, and lost 27
pounds.
Last summer, Lacey went to
Tony Sparber's New Image
Camp in Waterbury, Conn. for
eight weeks because she had
friends there. Again, she lost 27
pounds, living in a dorm and
learning nutrition, taking exer-
cise and self-esteem classes,
