better if you stick to the related

If, like most thinking people,
you find anything that smacks
of "cute" to be nauseating,
avoid this video at all costs.
It's a retelling of the classic
story about a Jewish man
whose family constantly com-
plains. So he goes to the rabbi
who advises him to bring his
cow, chicken and goat into his
home, and then finally remove
them all. In the end, of course,
the family discovers that life
without all the animals — that
is, exactly what they had to be-
gin with — was just dandy.
The graphics on this are all
right, as is the music. But there's
so much else to grate on your
nerves. As the lead character,
"Schmooze" (see what I mean
about cute?), Rabbi Joe Black
has a Yiddish accent His wife
and children, however, speak
polished English. Why?
Then there's the whole im-
age of "Schmooze" as some-
thing of a simpleton, a bumbling
fellow who seems so unworldly
and yet (here comes the deep
part, everybody!) understands
the real meaning of happiness.
Small children may find this
video entertaining. Parents who
watch it too many times are
likely to go insane.

Let's be honest: The market
has not exactly been over-
whelmed by outstanding books
for observant Jewish families.
More often than not they're
condescending, uninspiring,
poorly written or just plain stu-
pid. Mercifully, none of these
books by Sterna Citron falls
into those categories.
These are three Chasidic
tales (the Baal Shem Tov,
founder of the movement, al-
ways figures prominently) that
focus on humility, morality and
kindness. The Shepherd Boy
Who Loved God tells of wise
rabbis who learn an important
lesson from a young child;
Zushe's Find is about a man
who aids a young bride; and
Hirsh's Secret, the best of the
three, is the story of a peddlar
who quietly helps the poor.
Books cost $12.95 each plus
$4 shipping and handling for
the first book, $2 for each addi-
tional book. Kerem Publishing
is at 723 N. Orange Dr., Los
Angeles, CA 90038.
