ne of my favorite
memories of my
great-grandpar-
ents, Max and
Tillie Kaplan, has to do with a
visit we made to Michigan
more than 20 years ago.
We were living in Missouri
at the time. My great-grandpar-
ents, founders of the Work-
men's Circle here, were
distance so keenly as since I
had children.
Fortunately, my mother
makes a remarkable effort to
keep in touch with Yitzhak and
Adina. She sends presents, calls
regularly, writes letters, and
mails us plane tickets to visit
her each summer. When my
daughter was tiny there was
nothing she loved more than to

My great-grandmother
served us tea and cookies, then
we all played a game called
"Perfection." The object was to
fit a myriad of small, plastic
shapes into their appropriate
slots within 60 seconds, at
which point they all pop up
and out and fly everywhere.
My brother and sister, quite
young at the time, could not
get enough of it. Though my
great-grandparents were well
into their 80s, they were gra-
cious enough to play along,
time and again. They were un-
usually thoughtful, patient and
kind people.
I think often of my great-
grandparents and how much I
wish my children could have
known them. All my grandpar-
ents are gone, too. My hus-
band's parents are no longer
living. Both my parents live in
Missouri. Never have I felt the
snuggle in bed with her grand-
mother at night. Now, she
comes home from school with
little notes she has written: "I
love Mommy and Daddy and
Yitzhak" and "I love Aunt Bec-
ca" and "I love Grandma and
Grandpa."
This month's cover story, by
the author of The Long Dis-
tance Grandparent, is all about
how grandparents can stay in
touch with their gandsons and
granddaughters far away. It is
filled with great ideas and sug-
gestions — don't miss it.
Also be sure to take a look at
new ways to celebrate Tu
B'Shevat, the holiday of the
trees, and check out the terrific
recipe from our guest chef on
"Try It, You'll Like It."
