The mayor of Segovia and the
head of the University of Tel Aviv
are working together to create a
Center for Sephardic Studies in
the city. The center will occupy a
restored building in Segovia's old
Jewish quarter and will sponsor
debates, seminars and lectures.
Moving on to the city of
Barcelona, you will find an active
Jewish population with a com-
'Triunity center and two syna-
gogues: One is Sephardic and the
other, Ashkenazic.
The center houses a Jewish li-
brary, assembly hall, study
rooms, a modern kitchen and a
Center for Education and Docu-
mentation. The town has a
kosher butcher and a mikvah.

/African countries. A number of
Jewish families left Latin Amer-
ica in the 1980s to settle in the
city. The total Jewish population
today in Barcelona:is 3,500.
Finally, we come to Madrid.
This is a major city. There are
over 3,000 Jews living in the city
today; most of them came from
North Africa. The headquarters
\ -of the Jewish community is at 3
• Calle Balmes. Located there is
the Beth Yaacov Synagogue, a
large assembly hall, a rich li-
brary, facilities for kosher cater-
ing, a youth lounge and a small
synagogue. Visitors are welcome
to daily, Sabbath and holiday ser-
vices.
The Jews of Madrid have a day
school, built in 1977. The cur-

required by the Ministry of Edu-
cation plus instruction in He-
brew, Jewish history, Bible and
religion.

The Jews of Spain had cen-

trying to make amends for its
