Likud political hack, whose only
talents are his party loyalty,
would serve in this sensitive
post."
But the greatest role in Mr.
Bar-On's swift downfall was
played by the media, which dug
up juicy revelations about his
temperament and lifestyle.
They included jaunts to London
gambling establishments and a
stint as a counselor in the "I
Am" movement.
Scorn abounded all weekend,
but only Ofer Pines, a Labor ju-
nior Knesset member, took ac-
tion — in the form of an appeal
to the High Court of Justice.
On Sunday morning, a three-
judge panel effectively signaled
its displeasure with the "rail-
roaded" nature of the appoint-
ment by asking for the protocol
of the Friday Cabinet meeting.
But the judges never did get to
read that protocol. Twelve hours
later, Mr. Bar-On resigned,
making the case — and his ap-
pointment — a dead letter.

Did the Netanyahu
government
offer a political
hack?

The sinister speculation that
remained is that Mr. Ne-
tanyahu was looking not for a
strong, independent-minded ju-
rist. Rather, he sought someone
who would support a general
amnesty next year (when Israel
celebrates its 50th anniversary)
or close the cases pending
against ex-Justice Minister
Ya'akov Ne'eman (a Netanyahu
appointee under indictment for
obstruction of justice) and
Jerusalem's Mayor Ehud
Olmert (under indictment for
fraud).
The friendlier reading is that
Mr. Netanyahu intended to
break the "stranglehold," as he
sees it, of the "elite leftist jurists"
who have dominated the legal
landscape for the past 30 years.
Now the government must go
back to the drawing board. Mr.
Hanegbi has admitted to a pro-
cedural error, saying that Mr.
Bar-On's name should have
been submitted to the cabinet
well in advance.
He has also floated a more il-
lustrious list of possible re-
placements — none of which
has stopped the opposition from
calling for Mr. Hanegbi's resig-
nation as yet another of Mr.
Netanyahu's unsuitable ap-
pointees.
He was made justice minis-
ter after Mr. Ne'eman was
forced to resign. And Mr.
Hanegbi became a lawyer only
three years ago. Ironically, he
apparently did an apprentice-
ship under Bar-On.
