Our clinic is the original, don't trust your legs to any- one else! between 1991 and 1994, shows that 59 percent of men and 41 per- cent of women have a body mass index of more than 25. Ten years earlier, 51 percent of men and 41 percent of women were this heavy. Body mass index, or BMI, is quickly becoming the standard way of talking about obesity be- cause it is an easy way to compare people of /Efferent heights. BMI is body weight in kilo- grams divided by height in meters squared. A 5-foot-4-inch woman who weighs 145 pounds, for ex- ample, has a BMI of 25. Federal guidelines suggest that people should keep their body mass indexes under 25. Anything more than that is too much. Christine Palumbo, a nutri- tional communications consultant, places the blame on several fac- tors, including attitudes about eat- ing and exercise. And she says pervasive fear also contributes to the overall surge in weight in children. "Parents are afraid to let their kids go out by themselves," says Palumbo. 'They are too afraid to let kids go out and explore their neighborhoods." Instead, children are driven to and from activities that are orga- nized and less intense, says Palumbo. That lack of exercise ap- plies to adults, too. "Walking to the store for milk and bread, doing yard work, walk- ing to the library—we're just not doing it anymore," says Palumbo. Most obesity in children stems from lack of exercise, says a pedi- atrician. "Schools are cutting back on sports, activities that burn off en- ergy," says Dr. Louis Camras. "And kids seem to be more lazy, watching more TV." Dr. Camras says roly-poly tod- dlers don't necessarily grow into overweight adults. But physicians do become concerned when grade- schoolers become too heavy. Then they start the youngsters on diets to maintain their weight until they grow into the right pro- portions, says Dr. Camras. But the proliferation of low-fat, fat-free and no-fat foods has con- vinced people to believe they can get away with more, says Ms. Palumbo. "People see the word `low-fat' and they fail to take into account that there are calories in that food," she says. 'They use it to jus- tify eating the whole package in- stead of the regular serving." But despite the bulging waist- lines, the survey found that a ma- jority of overweight people want to weigh less, as do many whose weights are acceptably low. The survey also shows that cholesterol levels are falling. ❑ Copley News Service M.N. Ozdaglar, M.D., F.I.C.S. Senior Member Of America Ph lebology Society MICHIGAN VEIN CLINICS PLYMOUTH 851 S.
