Martin Luther King Jr.: Work toward his
dream.

Both events coincidentally
falling on the same date this year
serve as a time for reflection, for
renewed commitment to the
promise of democracy, freedom
and opportunity that America
holds, and for the reconciliation
to heal wounds that still exist be-
tween peoples. America is
unique among the nations of the
world because our freedoms,
hard-won and hard-kept, are sec-
ond to none.
Nevertheless, our country con-
tinues to suffer and struggle with
the vestiges of racial, ethnic and
religious intolerance. Some be-
lieve that pluralism — Ameri-
ca as a glorious melting pot or
a lovely mosaic — is a pipe
dream. But whether we are sep-
arated by ignorance, mistrust or
the hateful agendas of those who
seek to divide us, we must con-
tinue to work toward a better to-
morrow and look to the legacies
of the peacemakers to define our
true national spirit.
That which unites us as hu-
man beings and as Americans
can bring us closer together. We
have only to dream it, believe it
and do our best — person to per-
son and one person at a time —
to make it so.
