dining institutions ... in more
ways than just steak.
rrs NOT JUST that Tribute
on 12 Mile, west of Orchard Lake
Road, will soon celebrate its eight-
month birthday.
The remarkable thing about
this fine dining restaurant is that
it has gotten better ... something
which so many people said could
never happen.
The mastery of maitre d' and
general manager Mickey Bakst
and Executive Chef Takashi Yag-
ihashi has molded together one of
the Midwest's truly excellent
restaurants.
Sure it's expensive ... but there
is value received for every dollar
spent.
Tribute is indeed a tribute to
the best in fine dining.
CONGRATS ... to former del-
icatessen. folks Rose and Irving
Guttman, wintering in Florida ...
on their 50th anniversary ... to
Izzy Malin ... on his 80th birthday
... recently celebrated with fami-
ly and friends at Excalibur and

A steak house

choices.

four days later, to Izzy and Fran
Malin ... on their 59th anniver-
sary.
ERRATA, TYPO, Etc. Dept.
... Correct names of owners of
Parthenon Chop House and
Parthenon House banquet hall on
Drake in West Bloomfield are
Barry Rogow, Andy Stylianou,
Rick Rogow and Tommy Peris-
tens.
OVER 800 are expected to at-
tend the second annual Michigan
Culinary Food & Wine Extrava-
ganza, 6:30-10 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.
11, at Mac & Ray's restaurant and
banquet center, North River Road
in Harrison Township.
The theme is "Celebrating Mar-
di Gras" to benefit the Michigan
Culinary Team, which competes
in the World Culinary Salon (the
culinary equivalent of the
Olympics) every four years, plus
supporting culinary students at
local colleges.
Folks will enjoy tastings from
noted Detroit restaurants, spe-
cially paired wines and live en-
tertainment ... Tickets are $65
general admission and $125 gold
patron ... They can be gotten by
calling (810) 463-9660.
FOR REAL ... Norman's Eton
Street Station restaurant in Birm-
ingham is temporarily closed to
make renovating changes ... it'll
reopen in late spring with a new
look and new concept.
Norm and Bonnie LePage will
continue to own and operate the
historic train-station-turned-
restaurant.
HIGH ENERGY with happy
smiles radiated from a thrilled
audience as Sonny Turner and

the Platters had attendees rock-
ing and rolling in fun-loving
rhythms at their recent crowded
Andiamo Banquet Center ap-
pearance.
Little wonder that lead singer
Sonny is the recipient of so many
"best entertainer" awards.
Next up are the Scintas, tal-
ented music and comedy per-
formers who played to sell-out
crowds each of the two years they
have been at Andiamo ... They're
booked for March 19, 20 and 21...
with reservations already being
taken.
TIME WAS when folks got
bagels late on Saturday night and
would have them ready for early
Sunday morning breakfast ...
Steve Wachsberg at Brothers
Bagels on Northwestern High-
way, between Middlebelt and 14
Mile, has turned back the clock by
staying open Saturday nights un-
til midnight ... making bagels all
the while.
INSIDE OUT drumstick is
one of the quaint sampler dishes
at the new Pacific Grill under
Tom's Oyster Bar on Franklin off
Northwestern ... It's a chicken
drumstick with the meat pushed
up and turned inside out, grilled
with garlic, ginger soy and hoisin
sauce.
WHATEVER IS happening at
Pike Street Restaurant in Ponti-
ac is certainly for the better.
It is still the favorite dining spot
of many ... and now even more so
as others are beginning to discover
the difference.
Our recent dinner there, pre-
pared by Executive Chef Randy
Emert, captain of the 1996 Michi-
gan Culinary Olympic Team that
competed this past September in
Berlin, couldn't have been much
better.
Dining at Pike Street Restau-
rant was made even more enjoy-
able by the serving of Chris
Green, one of the tuxedoed wait-
persons who seem to have been
given a new lease on life with
their excellent service ... Chris
is exactly as you would want your
server to be ... and people have
been telling me about some of the
others, also.
Thursday, Friday and Satur-
day, Greg Nichols is still at the
keyboard from 7 p.m., entertain-
ing with music folks enjoy hear-
ing.
I happened to go upstairs to get
another look at the banquet rooms
at Pike Street Restaurant and
came away wondering why they
aren't filled every night with bar
mitzvahs, weddings, etc. ... The
two rooms hold up to about 180
people.
I do know that down the street,
Al Balooly, former bossman at
Topinka's On The Boulevard and
Topinka's Country House on
Telegraph and Seven Mile, has
taken over Allegro ... and that is
great news ... Al is a terrific
restaurant man and a wonderful
person. ❑
