DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN
AND GRANDCHILDREN TO REMAIN
JEWISH AND HAVE A MEMORABLE
ISRAELI EXPERIENCE, TOO?
10 who have never been to
camp than with 7-year-olds."
Janet and Lee Karson of West
Bloomfield.knew when daugh-
ter Lauren, 10 1/2, was ready
to go, because she clearly told
them. "When Lauren was 8,
she wasn't ready. She said,
`Mom, I'm scared, I don't want
to leave you and not see you,'"
says Ms. Karson.
Last year, Lauren announced
she was ready, and went to
Tamarack Camps for two
weeks. She'll be returning for
three weeks this year, and
younger sister Brittany, 7 1/2,
will go for the first time for two
weeks.
"Brittany wants to go now
because she saw how much
fun her sister had," says Ms.
Karson. There is also a comfort
factor for the younger sibling,
knowing that somewhere at
camp there is a familiar and
(hopefully) loving face.
"Brittany can see Lauren on
occasion during shmooze time,
and can eat with her on Shab-
bat," Ms. Karson said.
Camp orientations, fairs, vis-
its by camp directors, promo-
tional videos, even a visit to the
camp allow both children and
parents to get used to the idea
of overnight camps.
"We went to the orientations
and we visited Tamarack
Camps beforehand, because so
much is fear of the unknown,
and having seen it stopped the
fears," Ms. Karson says.
"It really should be a mutual
decision between children and
parents, that this is an adven-
ture, with wonderful opportu-
nities and great experiences
away from mom and dad," ad-
vises Mr. Stevens.
